1 cor 5:8
Let us celebrate our Passover, then, not with bread having old yeast of sin and wickedness, but with the bread that has no yeast, the bread of purity and truth.
We all know what yeast is, if you’re a baker you’ll know it’s one of the key ingredients or if you’ve been in biology class you must have come across it as a type of fungi, if you work in the medical field you’ll recognize it as a causative agent responsible for some infections and diseases, but with all this different concepts of what we may know yeast to be as, today we’re going to be focusing on the christian concept.
In the bible, we know yeast to be a substance used to make bread, basically it helps the dough rise and thereby making the bread soft when baked, but I’m sure some of us didn’t know that it has a spiritual significance.
When Jesus and his disciples were about to cross the lake in Mark 8:14-21 he told them to be wary of the “yeast of the Pharisees” his disciples were confused and thought that he was referring to their lack of enough bread, but he wasn’t talking about literal bread, he was talking about the teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
One morning I was reading the scriptures and I came across 1 Cor 5:6-8 where apostle Paul was warning the church in Corinth about this same yeast and I asked the Holy Spirit what is this yeast they’re all warning about and he said INFLUENCE. The yeast is influence.
Yes! Influence, we should be wary of the influence of the Pharisees and Sadducees, that your friend that watches porn and steals, that your favourite musician that sings about demonic activities in the disguise of nice lyrics and danceable jams, those social media content our eyes and ears absorb from time to time, for just like how a little bit of yeast makes dough rise that is how we can be influenced by this things and they take over our lives without our knowing it.
Funny enough in our present time and day, there’s this culture of “influencing” on social media, we have influencers of almost every niche you can think of be it makeup, tech, dancing e.t.c. However, we should always be intentional about which “influencer” we’re paying attention to, we should always pray for the spirit of discernment to recognise what is of the lord and what isn’t, because the rate of spreading of a false gospel and false teachings is increasing and if we’re not grounded we may be swayed by it.
As a friend of mine would say “it all starts from the subconscious mind” those people you hang around with day by day, those false teachings you listen to, little by little they start to influence your mind and before you know it you start manifesting what your mind have been absorbing in your physical reality. You wouldn’t know when you’ll pick up a cigarette and say “oh Peter does it anyways and he’s fine let me just try one drag” and that is how you will be dragged into darkness.
Now does that mean that you shouldn’t speak to anyone who does that or avoid people or be judgemental, No! 1 cor 5: 11-13 lets us know that it is our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who does these things that we should be even more careful of. We should never be afraid to correct and admonish our friends in Christ and if they fail to listen then we should cut off from such people cause then they start become yeasts in our lives.
Looking back to the origin of the Passover festival, God commanded the people of Israel to set aside 7 days from the 14th day of the first month Lev 23:5-15, Ex 13:3-7. During this period of time, no one is allowed to eat bread with yeast or have anything to do with yeast, before they left Egypt, God also told them to kill a lamb and paint their door posts with it’s blood then eat the meat with bitter herbs and unleavened bread. They may have not realized it then but they were fulfilling the purpose which Christ would come for generations later.

Jesus is the sacrificial lamb, he came to shed his blood for our salvation so that we have may life and we shall not die. When the children of Israel painted their door posts with the lamb’s blood the angel of death passed over them. And that is why Christ came, to save us from death and give us eternal life, he came for to die for our sins, to take away the yeast from our lives so that we may live as an unleavened bread that has no yeast.
So my dear friends in Christ let us open our minds and our eyes and heed the warning that Jesus gave his disciples, to be wary of the yeast of the Pharisees of our day.
